Phantom Lines

Construction sign in rural Ohio.

Driving my daughter to a graduation party, we spent several miles on this stretch of road in rural Ohio. The road clearly had well marked edge lines – yet every couple hundred yards we passed these bright orange signs cautioning us that those edge lines helping us to maintain our lane simply did not exist. Judging by the pavement, it didn’t seem like the road was recently resurfaced. But I might be mis-remembering. It might have been a chip and seal job and not blacktop asphalt. But even that done recently should’ve kicked up some tiny pieces of gravel or shown evidence of recently fresh tar.

Perhaps they had some other emergency road construction elsewhere and couldn’t gather up the signs as quickly as I would have preferred! In any case, the road was very well maintained and I don’t have any cause to complain. It was just a curious thing to be reminded of so often when the signs really no longer applied to the road conditions we experienced.
